Lemongrass is a fast-growing, aromatic perennial grass, which grows up to 1.5m tall. Lemongrass is widely used as a culinary herb throughout Asia and has been used in India to treat fevers and infectious illnesses.

There are two main types of Lemongrass. West Indian Lemongrass C.citratus and East Indian Lemongrass C.flexuosus. Both of these varieties are native to India, although the former is now mainly cultivated in the Caribbean. They broadly share therapeutic properties although C.citratus is more usefully used for musculoskeletal conditions. The two varieties have slightly different chemistry. C.nardus Citronella a similar species, is mainly used as an insect repellent. Another variety, C.shoenanthus has broadly similar chemistry to C.citratus.

Lemongrass essential oil is a middle aromatic note, which blends well with spicy oils, eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary and Vetiver.
