Grapefruit is thought to be a hybrid of the Pomelo or Shaddock (C. maximus) and the Sweet Orange (C. sinensis). The tree can reach 21m in height, with large green glossy leaves. It shares the familiar white, star-shaped flowers of the Rutaceae family. Many cultivated varieties exist. It was originally found in the Caribbean and is now widely cultivated in North and South America and Israel.

Grapefruit essential oil is a zesty, citrus bittersweet top note, blending well with most other oils, offering life and lift to a blend. Grapefruit essential oil is cleansing, refreshing, cooling and uplifting.

Nervous System

Grapefruit essential oil may prove supportive when managing feelings of irritability, anger and other so-called ‘liver emotions’. In fact, the oil is thought to be generally helpful in presentations of the liver and may also be of benefit for headaches associated with liver congestion. Energetically stuck emotions and emotional heaviness could also benefit from working with this oil.

 

Digestive System

Grapefruit essential oil could assist sluggish digestion when applied topically as well as indigestion caused by over-rich and fatty foods. It may also help to increase appetite. Furthermore, It is thought that the essential oil could support the body to efficiently deal with overload on the bodily systems from an unhealthy lifestyle and diet.

 

Lymphatic System 

Lymphatic congestion and sluggish lymphatics might benefit from the use of Grapefruit essential oil, supporting the bodies lymphatic system to function normally and healthily. 

 

Skin

The following ways to use the essential oil should help you to get the most benefit from the oil. 

 

 

For use with the Nervous System

Diffuser Method

Add between 3-8 drops (depending on room size) of Grapefruit essential oil to the surface of the water in your diffuser. Or onto the pad in fan-driven vaporisers. Replenish as needed. May be combined in a blend with other essential oils up to the maximum amount of drops. Blends well with most other essential oils.

 

For use with the digestive system

Stomach Oil

Grapefruit is a great addition to include in a stomach massage oil blend. Massage gently in a clockwise direction and this may help to encourage and support a normal movement and function of the digestive system. 

Blend Grapefruit essential oil and any other digestive oils of your choice Into 25ml of carrier oil. 

The dilution ratio will be 2-3% (12-15 drops) in 25ml of carrier oil for adults bodily application.

For elderly people, those with sensitive skin, or those with medical conditions a 1% dilution (5 drops) is needed.

 

For use with the skin

Balance Skin Moisturiser

Using Grapefruit essential oil in your handmade moisturiser is a great way to apply the oil and may help to support the health of your skin. 

The dilution ratio will be 2-3% (12-15 drops in 25ml/gm of carrier or base moisturiser) for adults bodily application.

For elderly people, those with sensitive skin, use on the face or those with medical conditions a 1% dilution (5 drops) is needed.

 

For use with the Lymphatic System

Body Oil

The Lymphatic system may benefit from applying a body oil blend including Grapefruit essential oil. This is best applied after body brushing and could encourage a healthy lymphatic system.

Blend Grapefruit essential oil with any other oils of your choice Into 25ml of carrier oil. 

The dilution ratio will be 2-3% (12-15 drops) in 25ml of carrier oil for adults bodily application.

For elderly people, those with sensitive skin, or those with medical conditions a 1% dilution (5 drops) is needed.





Non-toxic. Non-irritant in dilution. Non-sensitising, Short shelf-life use fresh. 

Slightly phototoxic - do not use in concentrations of more than 4% (20 drops in 25ml) if applying to the skin within 2 hours of subsequent exposure to sunlight or sunbeds. If blending with other phototoxic oils adhere to the total dilution of the essential oil with the lowest concentration allowable for phototoxic oils.
