Oregano is a member of the Lamiaceae (Labiatae) botanical family. Oregano essential oil comes from a hardy, bushy perennial herb, up to 90cms high. It has a hairy stem, dark green ovate leaves and pinky-purple flowers. Oregano is a common garden plant with strong aroma when leaves are bruised.

Oregano oil is mainly produced in the former USSR, Bulgaria and Italy, and is native to Europe, now cultivated all over the world including the USA, India and South America. 

There is a lot of confusion over the exact botanical classification of Oregano and Marjoram species and there are over thirty varieties, some of which are used to produce essential oils. Although the majority of commercial ‘Oregano oil’ bought are from Spanish Oregano Thymus capitatus or Common Oregano Origanum vulgare.

This is known as the ‘true’ Oregano of the herb garden. Used traditionally in the herb form for digestive upsets, respiratory problems (asthma, bronchitis, cough, etc), colds and flu as well as inflammations of the mouth and throat.

Oregano essential oil has also been used often as a fragrance component in various toiletries.

Oregano essential oil has a warm, spicy, herbaceous aroma. It blends well with, Citronella, Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood.

Immune System

Diffusing Oregano essential oil into your environment may be particularly beneficial when there is sickness in the home. The essential oil has traditionally been thought to have antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal properties and could assist with supporting a strong immune system and may help support when dealing with cold and flu symptoms. 

It is also thought to have stimulant properties for the nervous and immune system, which could prove beneficial when dealing with fatigue as a result of illness and convalescence. 

 

Respiratory System

Diffusing Oregano essential oil into your environment may assist with the symptoms of respiratory illnesses, such as colds and flu and could support a healthy and normally functioning respiratory system. 

Could prove helpful to use with infections and may offer support with symptoms such as coughs, sore throat, runny nose.





The following ways to use the essential oil should help you to get the most benefit from the oil. 

 

As Oregano essential oil is such a strong and powerful oil, the aromatherapy uses must be closely followed to avoid irritation or other adverse effects. 

The essential oil should not be used on the skin due to irritation risks. It however can be used in a diffuser to benefit from its effect on the respiratory and immune systems. The amount used is much less than most other essential oils as it is so strong and less is definitely more with this oil. 

 

For use with the Respiratory and Immune Systems

Diffuser Method

Use Oregano essential oil in your diffuser. Oregano is a powerful essential oil and therefore a maximum of 1-2 drops should be added onto the surface of the water in your diffuser or onto the pad in fan-driven vaporisers. Replenish as needed.

May also be combined in a blend with other essential oils up to the maximum amount of 3-8 drops overall, but still, a maximum of these drops would be 2 drops for Oregano essential oil. Blends well with most other essential oils.

 

For support with the Immune system and home use

Aromatherapy multi-surface spray

Oregano essential oil can be a great addition to a natural surface spray. However please do not allow the cleaning spray to come into contact with your, so wearing gloves as you would with any other cleaning solution is recommended. 

For household use

  • Your chosen essential oils. The dilution ratio will be a maximum of 1% (5 drops in 25ml)
  • An empty dark glass spray bottle to hold 100 ml blend and a little extra for the essential oils. 
  • 100 ml distilled or spring water
  • Less than 1tsp grain alcohol (this is to preserve and dilute the mixture)

Method

  1. Add the alcohol into the glass bottle
  2. Then add the essential oils and shake to mix.
  3. Put the lid back on and allow this mixture to sit for at least 1 hour 
  4. Finally, add the water and shake well.
  5. Always shake again before each use.

Please test surfaces before use to avoid any damage.





Dermal toxin, skin irritant, mucous membrane irritant, Avoid during pregnancy. 

Should not be used on the skin at all. 

Essential oils are not for internal use. Do not ingest. 

Please consult your healthcare professional before using essential oils if you are taking medication or have pre-existing medical conditions or during pregnancy.

Essential oils should always be diluted to the appropriate dilution ratio before use on the skin. 

Avoid contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes.
