There are different varieties of Cedarwood, including Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus deodara These are the ‘true’ Cedarwoods of the Pinaceae botanical family.

Cedarwood Texas essential oil Juniperus mexicana Schiede is in fact not a ‘true’ Cedarwood, despite its commonly known name and is a Juniper. This is a similar occurrence for Cedarwood Virginian Juniperus virginiana. These both belong to a different family of the Cupressaceae.

Texas Cedarwood is a small alpine evergreen tree that grows up to 7 metres high with stiff green needles and an irregular shaped trunk and branches. It is native to South Western USA, Mexico and Central America; the oil is mainly produced in Texas, hence its common name. Traditionally Cedarwood oil has been used for skin rashes, arthritis and rheumatism. The Texas Cedarwood essential oil is thought to have very similar uses to Cedarwood atlas.

Texas Cedarwood essential oil is a warming, strengthening, tonifying, soothing and uplifting oil.

Diffusing this essential oil is one of the most appropriate ways to use it.

 

Diffuser Method

Diffusing Texas Cedarwood essential oil into your environment can be particularly beneficial when there is sickness in the home.

It is also a great way to work with the nervous, respiratory and immune systems.

Add between 3-8 drops (depending on room size) of Texas Cedarwood essential oil to the surface of the water in your diffuser. Or onto the pad in fan-driven vaporisers. Replenish as needed. May be combined in a blend with other essential oils up to the maximum amount of drops. Blends well with most other essential oils.

 

Aromatherapy Inhaler

Aromatherapy inhalers are perfect for personal use and very convenient when on the go. In an empty nasal inhaler (available online) add between 2-4 drops of Texas Cedarwood essential oil onto the pad within the inhaler.

Use whenever a boost of energy is required, by gently breathing in from the nasal inhaler.



Although sharing similar therapeutic properties with Atlas Cedarwood Juniperus mexicana Schiede has a history of being regarded to have dermal cautions and is best avoided in aromatherapy use.

However, according to the definitive ‘Essential Oil Safety’ by Tisserand & Young, thujopsene, alpha-cedrene and cedrol rich essential oil of Texan cedarwood (Juniperus ashei syn. mexicana) has no specific contraindications:
