Oleum Botanica’s Tangerine essential oil is expressed from the evergreen tree Citrus reticulata Blanco, belonging to the Rutaceae botanical family. The tree can reach 5 metres in height, has shiny dark green leaves, and fragrant white flowers. There are several cultivated varieties of C. reticulata, including clementine, satsuma, and Mandarin. Tangerine is a larger and rounder variety than Mandarin with a looser peel.

Native to China and the Far East, Citrus reticulata trees were brought to Europe in the early nineteenth century, and to America by the middle of the century. Where the cultivar was called tangerine. Production is now carried out in the countries bordering the Mediterranean.

Tangerine is used extensively in flavouring. Aromatically Tangerine essential oil is classed as a top note, with a fresh, sweet citrus aroma, and is said to lack the dryness note of Mandarin and have a ‘thinner’ body. Tangerine essential oil blends well with most other oils.
